Notes: This substance is considered by the International Organization for Standardization not to require a common name; “cresylic acid” was given as an alternative in ISO 765:1976.
The name “tricresol” has been used in the literature for mixtures of o-cresol [95-48-7], m-cresol [108-39-4] and p-cresol [106-44-5], but it has no official status.
The name “metacresol” is approved by the British Pharmacopoeia Commission for 3-methylphenol [108-39-4].
